About Katie
Emphasizing the mind-body connection, Katie creates classes that link movement to breath. Pulling from her various teachers and mentors, she brings awareness to proper alignment in order to ensure safety and a balanced practice. Katie sequences classes to prepare students for meditation and relaxation, and while promoting mindfulness throughout the practice, supporting students as they find their full expression of each pose.
An avid athlete and wellness enthusiast, Katie began practicing yoga in 2004. As a part of her job at a college fitness facility, she checked students into a beginner yoga class and took the class for free. At first, she giggled so often the class resulted in more of an ab workout, and she felt like laying on the floor at the end of class was a waste of time. While Katie wasn't an initial fan of yoga, she returned each week and over time, began to build an appreciation for the practice.
Over the next several years, Katie continued to practice yoga, attending various classes based in Hatha, Iyengar, Ashtanga, Bikram, and Vinyasa styles of yoga. Her regular practice enhanced both her mental and physical health. Grounding her amidst stressful city living, Katie's yoga practice became an integral part of her life. In 2009, Katie discovered Tejas where she deepened her personal practice and obtained her 200-hour teaching certification in March 2012.
Since obtaining her certification, Katie has taught yoga at The University of Chicago, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Tejas, Union League Club of Chicago, and Daystar Center. She's also lead yoga-based workshops for organizations such as Lurie Children's Hospital, New Trier High School, Accenture, Pinterest, Cars.com, and A Long Walk Home.
Having earned a master's degree in counseling from Boston College and having worked as a therapist for years, Katie is particularly sensitive to incorporating lessons from yoga into daily life, as well as bringing life experiences to the mat.
